"Nimmu House" is a family–run guesthouse where the welcome is warm. It is perfectly situated – being both in the heart of the traditional temple–town of Gokarna and a stone's throw away from the beautiful 2–km stretch of Gokarn Main Beach – and is a genuine "home away from home". Its' lovely leafy garden provides a safe and peaceful haven to escape to when you need to avoid the midday sun or simply need a break from the bustle outside.
Nirmala and Ajit Gokarn (Yes, "Gokarn" really is their surname as well as the name of the town!) started the guesthouse way back in 1990 when their children were young. It was one of the first homes in Gokarna to open its doors to international guests and its' name is the nickname affectionately given to the gregarious Nirmala by the many foreign visitors who stayed there.
In the early days, "Nimmu House" had 10 modest rooms and shared bathroom facilities and though Nimmu worked hard stitching trousers and tops, serving 40–50 thalis a day to people gathered on the floor in the front room and serving countless cups of chai throughout the day, there was always time for a joke and a laugh. The hospitality at "Nimmu House" is famous and has frequently extended to people who need help in reaching their embassy urgently for example.
Nimmu and Ajit are now proud grandparents several times over and 2000 heralded the moment for the next generation – Amit and Bharata Gokarn – to take over the running of "Nimmu House" and provide its legendary welcome. In 2004 the "Nimmu House" was modernised and developed to provide the improved amenities that guests can enjoy today. Ensuite bathroom facilities, private balconies with seaviews, wifi, carparking and left–luggage service etc. and an open rooftop to practice yoga or meditation.
Travellers from all over the globe continue to visit "Nimmu House" and it's reputation is endorsed in the likes of Trip Advisor, Lonely Planet, Rough Guides and the german, womens magazine "Birgitte". Perhaps the most reliable endorsement though is the many ordinary guests and yoga groups who return year after year and would never dream of staying anywhere else!
